James F. Eliason, Ph.D.
Executive Director of Great Lakes Stem Cell Innovation Center

Dr. Eliason has obtained his doctorate at the University of Chicago and has 40 years of experience in stem cell research. After postdoctoral training at the Paterson Cancer Institute, Manchester, England and the Radiobiological Institute TNO, Rijswijk, the Netherlands, he was on the staff of the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research in Lausanne, Switzerland. He then worked for Hoffmann-La Roche in Basle, Switzerland and Kamakura, Japan where he headed  the preclinical oncology drug discovery programs. He moved to Detroit to the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University, where he was Director of Research Resources. He helped start the human tissue research services company Asterand, as Chief Scientific Officer. Asterand became a public company in 2006 and was the best performing stock on the London Stock Exchange in 2008. 



Jessica Eason-Butler, M.S.
Director of Lab Operations


Jessica obtained her Masters of Science in Equine Genetics from Michigan State University. She has worked in molecular and cellular biology at Pfizer, Velcura and Asterand. While at Asterand, she setup and managed the immortalized and primary cell bank and performed cellular assay services. She has particular interest in primary cells and Stem Cells.
